Samunjin History Park

Samunjin History Park
Accounts on the exact origin of the name of this area differ. Some hold that the Chinese character for sa in the name “Samunjin” means a Buddhist temple because the area used to mark the gateway to a major Buddhist temple nearby named Inheungsa. Others hold that the Chinese character for sa means “sand” on the beaches along the nearby river because Samunjin was a gateway by which merchant vessels brought salt into the area and took local products out of Daegu to other regions.

The first-ever piano in Korea arrived here

The Sidebothams, married Christian missionaries from the United States, arrived here at the Samunjin Ferry Stop along with their piano on March 26, 1900, thus marking the beginning of their mission in the churches of Daegu. It took three full days for almost 20 workers to carry all the belongings of the missionary couple from here to their new home on Yakjeon Street. Neighbors who heard the piano for the first time in their lives were both amazed and terrified that the wooden-box-like object could make such elaborate sounds, and took to calling the instrument “a ghost box.” Dalseong County commemorated the arrival of the missionary couple by subsidizing the production of a new musical entitled Here Comes the Ghost Box in September 2013. The county has also been organizing the Concert of 100 Pianos every year since 2012. A piano museum will be added to Hwawon Amusement Park in the future.
